A step-by-step guide.
If “what’s for dinner?” is the question you dread most every day, you’re not alone. I used to feel the same way. Feeding a family of six well, without spending a fortune or losing my mind, felt like a never-ending puzzle.
So I created The Capsule, a simple, flexible way to plan dinners that takes the daily decision-making off your plate. Here’s how it works, and how you can steal it for your own family.
Why I Created The Capsule
Feeding your family well shouldn’t take up your whole brain. The Capsule is designed to lighten the mental load: less stress, less money wasted, and more energy for the people sitting around your table.
I could never find a meal plan that actually worked for us. Every one I tried needed a long list of ingredients, cost more than I wanted to spend, and left me with half-used jars I’d never touch again. And I felt stuck with someone else’s days and someone else’s choices.
So I stopped planning meals and started planning themes. You choose the meal; the structure does the rest. And that’s where the real savings happen.
How The Capsule Works: Every Night Has a Job
Instead of starting from scratch every week, each night of the week has a theme. You simply fill in a meal that fits. Pick one meal for each night, and your plan (and your grocery list) is done in about five minutes.
Night 1: Crockpot Night
Set it in the morning and dinner is handled by 5pm. Make extra on purpose, because tomorrow needs it.
Ideas: chicken with rice and veggies, pot roast and potatoes, BBQ chicken sandwiches, salsa chicken bowls.
Night 2: Leftover Remix Night
Night 1’s protein becomes something brand new. Cook once, eat twice: less cooking, less waste, less spending.
Ideas: tacos, stir fry, chicken fried rice, burrito bowls, pasta bake, quesadillas, wraps.
Night 3: Pasta Night
Cheap, filling, and everyone eats. Toss in veggies or extra chicken to stretch it.
Ideas: baked ziti, spaghetti with meat sauce, creamy veggie pasta, pesto pasta with chicken.
Night 4: Convenience Night
Frozen pizza counts. Rotisserie chicken counts. A planned easy night beats a last-minute takeout run.
Ideas: frozen or homemade pizza, a freezer meal, rotisserie chicken and salad, a leftovers reset night.
Night 5: All-in-One Night
One pan or one pot, and done. Fewer dishes, simple ingredients.
Ideas: sheet pan dinners, soup and bread, chili, casseroles, skillet meals.
Night 6: Flex Night
Try a new recipe, fire up the grill, or clean out the pantry. It’s the fun night, or the use-it-up night.
Ideas: a new recipe, a themed dinner, a pantry clean-out meal, grill night, DIY tacos or sliders.
Night 7: Kids’ Favorite Night
Low pressure for them and for you. Bonus: let them help make it.
Ideas: breakfast for dinner, snack plates, buttered noodles with veggies, mini pizzas.
My Favorite Money-Saving Trick: Plan Around the Sales
Here’s where The Capsule really shines. I fill in my themes using whatever is on sale at my local store that week. Chicken thighs on sale? That’s Crockpot Night and Remix Night handled. Pasta buy-one-get-one? Pasta Night is done. The themes stay the same; the sales decide the meals.
How to Start Your First Capsule
- Grab a notepad or the notes app on your phone.
- Write down the seven nights.
- Check your fridge, pantry, and this week’s sales.
- Fill in one meal for each night.
- Turn it into your grocery list.
That’s it. No complicated rules, no one-time ingredients, and no guilt if you need to swap nights around. Real life happens, and The Capsule is built to bend with it.
Feeding Your Family Well Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
The Capsule isn’t about perfection. It’s about having a simple plan so you can spend less time stressing over dinner and more time enjoying the people you’re feeding.
